Engine 3066 | Rail Programs | Photos | News

Engine 3066 is sure to turn a few heads when she rolls down a city street on her way to Okefenokee Technical College (OTC). The locomotive, an Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) SD40, six-axle, fully operational engine, is being donated to the OTC Foundation by Progress Rail Services to serve as a training aid for OTC rail programs. As one might imagine, relocating a locomotive without a ready-made track is tricky business, and potentially expensive. When officials from CSX Transportation and Utilco Railroad Services agreed to support the project with cash and in-kind contributions to relocate the engine, the project was underway.  The Patterson, Georgia, Progress Rail Manufacturing site then began the process of refurbishing the locomotive, an additional donation to the project by Progress Rail. When the engine was being prepared for paint, a relocation team was created and had its first meeting in December 2012. In addition to the three rail companies, the team has officials from Georgia Power Company, Mediastream, and the City of Waycross. Relocation date is July 1. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this project!

Engine 3066 stands 16 feet high, 68 feet 10 inches long, and 10 feet 4 inches wide, weighing in at 390,000 lbs. The total height, with the panel rail, comes to 17 feet 6 inches.
