American Proteins Gives to OTC Foundation for Scholarships

American Proteins owners, Tommy and Chantal Bagwell, through the Bagwell Family Foundation, recently made another significant donation to the Okefenokee Technical College Foundation for student scholarships, making their overall contribution $9,000. Human Resources & Safety Manager for American Proteins, Norman Barber (right), presented the latest donation to Okefenokee Technical College President Dr. Glenn Deibert during the 2012 holiday season.

According to OTC Foundation Executive Director Cindy Tanner, the donation will fund three $500 Bagwell Scholarships for deserving OTC students who live in or near Bacon County.  Forsyth County business and civic leaders Tommy and Chantal Bagwell established the $500,000 Bagwell Family Foundation Scholarship Endowment Fund in 2005 to provide scholarships for students attending technical colleges located near their family businesses. The family business, American Proteins, Inc., currently has three locations, one of which is an Alma facility located on U. S. Highway 1.

Scholarship recipients are chosen using the following criteria: financial need, proximity to the company’s operation sites, and probability of academic success. Additionally, recipients must pledge to give back to the college an amount equal to what they receive, a stipulation of the Bagwell Family Foundation that may be achieved over the student’s lifetime. Prior scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply for funding in subsequent years.

“We appreciate your donation in support of technical education,” Deibert told Barber. “In many cases, scholarships are critical for retention and college completion. This donation will help offset the cost of tuition, books, and supplies for three deserving students, who will be extremely grateful for the assistance.”
