American Proteins Gives to OTC Foundation for Scholarships

American Proteins, Inc., through the Bagwell Family Foundation, has given over $7,000 in total contributions to the Okefenokee Technical College Foundation for student scholarships. Human Resources & Safety Manager for American Proteins, Inc., Norman Barber (right), presented the latest donation, $1,500, to Okefenokee Technical College President Dr. Gail Thaxton just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

The donation will fund three $500 Bagwell Scholarships for deserving OTC students who live in or near Bacon County. The contribution was made possible by Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Bagwell.

According to Thaxton, Forsyth County business and civic leaders Tommy and Chantal Bagwell established a $500,000 Bagwell Family Foundation Scholarship Endowment Fund in 2005 to provide scholarships for students attending technical colleges located near their family business locations. The family business, American Proteins, Inc., currently has three locations, once of which is an Alma facility located on U. S. Highway 1. The facility closed in 2009, but has reopened.

Scholarship recipients are chosen using the following criteria: financial need, proximity to the company’s operation sites, and probability of academic success. Additionally, recipients must pledge to give back to the college an amount equal to what they receive, a stipulation of the Bagwell Family Foundation that may be achieved over the student’s lifetime. Prior scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply for funding in subsequent years.

“We appreciate the Bagwells and their support of student success,” stated Dr. Thaxton. “Scholarships are increasingly necessary to offset the cost of tuition, books, and specialized training supplies. At a time when workforce solutions are critical to our community’s recovery, contributions to higher education are a smart, relevant investment.”
