Buchanan & Pearson Selected for OTC Charles Eames Scholarship

Amanda Buchanan (2nd from left), a clinical lab technology degree student, and Marla Pearson (2nd from right), a practical nursing student, were recently selected as the 2012 recipients of the Okefenokee Technical College (OTC) Charles Eames Scholarship. Mr. Charles Eames (left) and OTC President Dr. Gail Thaxton (right) congratulated students.

Buchanan of Pierce County is a graduate of the OTI medical lab diploma program and is currently enrolled in the OTC clinical lab degree program. She is employed full-time at Southeast Georgia Primary Care as a lab manager and hopes to earn her associate’s degree soon in order to advance her career.

“Life is better today thanks to college,” writes Buchanan in her scholarship application. “I graduated in 2001 and immediately started working in a laboratory. I’ve worked full time as a laboratory technician since then, and I absolutely love it.
“As soon as I get my associate’s degree, I would like to continue my education and earn a bachelor’s degree in the same field.”

Pearson, a 2009 Brantley County High School graduate, had to recently quit her job at Coley Electric & Plumbing Supply in order to participate in clinicals. “I have had a job since I was fifteen years old,” writes Pearson.

“This scholarship will enable me to pay for the items that Hope doesn’t cover,” she continued, “like books, lab kits, uniforms, and other expenses necessary for the program. I greatly appreciate this scholarship, especially since I am not able to work now.”

After graduating from OTC, Pearson plans to work as an LPN and begin earning her RN or physical therapy assistant degree.

Eames, former director of the Okefenokee Regional Library System (ORLS), community champion and volunteer, established the Charles Eames Endowed Scholarship Fund in December 2008 to benefit OTC students through scholarships and literacy programs.

OTC Foundation Director Cindy Tanner and the Foundation trustees congratulate Amanda Buchanan and Marla Pearson on the award and extend sincere appreciation to Charles Eames for his generous contributions to the community and OTC.
