Mark Deal Receives Governor’s Award

Mark Deal, Environmental Horticulture instructor at Okefenokee Technical College, was awarded the Governor’s Commendation for Excellence in Customer Service January 29, 2009, in Atlanta. The award ceremony is part of the Governor’s “Faster. Friendlier. Easier.” initiative, which includes recognition of outstanding state employees. “Education is a source of assistance,” notes Governor Purdue, “and you cannot underestimate the impact of one-on-one, face-to-face contact with people to ensure our customer’s needs are met.

Deal was nominated for the award by OTC President Gail Thaxton. According to Thaxton, Deal’s contributions are not due to rules or mandates, but part of his work ethic. “Mark is just fulfilling his mission to support our people, she stated.”

Governor Purdue congratulated all of the honorees stating that they are the “best of the best,” selected among over 700 nominees from 52 agencies. Deal, a Georgia Certified Landscaping Professional, represented the Technical College System of Georgia.

Deal was accompanied by OTC President Gail Thaxton, VP for Economic Development Andy Brannen, and OTC co-worker and lifelong friend, Margaret Fairley. In addition to the award, Deal received a congratulatory letter from Ron Jackson, Commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia. “It is apparent,” writes Jackson, “that you truly understand the importance of looking beyond today to ensure a promising tomorrow for your community and for our state.”

Glenn Richardson (R), Speaker of the House, and Representatives Tommy Smith (R) and Mark Williams (R), joined OTC President Gail Thaxton and OTC VP Andy Brannen in congratulating Mark Deal, who was awarded the Governor’s Commendation for Excellence in Customer Service.
