Shannon Graves Receives Military Officers Association Scholarship

Shannon Graves (left), an accounting student at Okefenokee Technical College, was awarded a Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) scholarship at the association’s September meeting by MOAA Okefenokee Chapter President Frank Baugh (right). Graves, who drove from her home in Peachtree City to accept the award, was one of two students to be recognized as a MOAA scholarship recipient. Shannon Graves and Frank Baugh

The MOAA scholarship is awarded to veterans or family members of veterans attending a post-secondary institution. Ms. Graves is married to veteran James Graves, who actively served in the Marine Corps from 2001 until 2005. James works in the trucking industry so that Shannon can stay home with their smallest child and take online classes. After Shannon completes her degree, she plans to work while her husband attends college. James and Shannon have two children: Taylor, 7 and Kirsten, 2.

Graves is the first “true” distance education student to receive a scholarship through Okefenokee Tech. Although she began taking classes on the Alma and Waycross campuses, Shannon now takes all of her accounting classes online and lives far beyond the college’s service delivery area.
