Okefenokee Technical College Accredited By Commission on Colleges
Okefenokee Technical College (OTC) has been granted accreditation through the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS-COC).  The announcement was made on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at the SACS-COC College Delegate Assembly Business Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

SACS-COC is the recognized regional accrediting body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states. It serves as the common denominator of shared values and practices among the diverse institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Latin America and other international sites approved by the Commission on Colleges that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degrees.

The agency examines college operations and makes recommendations on how to improve the effectiveness of the institution by ensuring that the college meets standards established by the higher education community that address the needs of society and students.

To gain or maintain accreditation with the Commission on Colleges, an institution must comply with the standards contained in the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement and with the policies and procedures of the Commission on Colleges.

“This accomplishment is a tribute to every member of the college’s faculty and staff, especially our COC leadership team - Dr. Steve Pearce, Vice President for Academic Services and COC Liaison; Pamela Farr, Vice President for Administrative Services; Danita Cannon, Vice President for Student Affairs; Andy Brannen, Vice President for Economic Development; Carol Shugart, Director of Institutional Effectiveness; Cindy Tanner, Director of Public Relations; Dr. Jewell Sweat, Dean of Academic Affairs; Larry Godair, Dean of Academic Affairs; Austin Johnson, Dean of the Alma Campus; and Margaret Fairley, Executive Assistant to the President,” stated OTC President Dr. Gail Thaxton.

The announcement brings about the completion of a five-year effort to obtain accreditation through SACS-COC.  Okefenokee Tech staff began preparing for accreditation in 2004. Following a successful candidacy visit, OTC officially became a candidate for accreditation in 2007.  A team from SACS-COC then conducted the actual accreditation visit in early 2009. The results were overwhelmingly positive for the college.

“Attaining SACS-COC accreditation verifies the quality of every aspect of the college’s operations,” said Thaxton, “and ensures continuous improvement. In essence, receiving this accreditation will improve the relationship we enjoy with our students and further enhance OTC’s ability to provide excellent educational programs and services for our students and communities.”
