OTC President & State Officials Discuss Legislative Issues

Okefenokee Technical College President Dr. Gail Thaxton (left) recently met with Senator Greg Goggans (right) and Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) state board member Ben Copeland to thank them both for their support and to inform them of the 2010 legislative priorities of the TCSG and Okefenokee Technical College.

Following the Alma Campus Ribbon Cutting and Open House Celebration, Thaxton sat down with both officials in the new library and began the discussion by summarizing OTC’s accomplishments in 2009, including SACS-COC accreditation (announced December 8, 2009). She also reported on how the college continued to fulfill its mission while experiencing budget reductions coupled with enrollment growth. President and State Officials

Thaxton also shared with Senator Goggans and Mr. Copeland how upcoming legislative issues would impact the future of OTC and other Georgia technical colleges. Some of the issues discussed were funding for enrollment growth, funding for the TCSG 2011 capital outlay projects, carryover funding, and the proposed State Board name change.

“Through all of the challenges, Thaxton stated, “we remain future focused, which is why it is important that our local, state, and federal legislators know our vision and our impact in the community. We know that we can count on Senator Goggans, our other local delegates, and our state board members, to continue to support OTC, advocate for technical education, and use their influence to position the college and the Technical College System for strength and growth, stated Thaxton.”
