The SRMC Auxiliary established the SRMC Presidents Scholarship Fund with the Okefenokee Technical College Foundation in 2008 to provide scholarships to students in healthcare programs at OTC. The gift presented this year is an additional donation that will fund scholarships in 2010.

The auxiliary’s mission, according to Stephanie Smith, SRMC Director of Volunteers, is to ensure quality healthcare workers for the future.

“We certainly appreciate this gesture of generosity and educational support,” stated Thaxton. “We enjoy a successful partnership with Satilla Regional and sincerely appreciate this gift that will assist healthcare students in realizing their career goals.”

The idea for the scholarship fund came as the organization’s members planned their 2008 annual banquet. Traditionally, the auxiliary gifts the outgoing president with a token of appreciation. Because of Auxiliary President Rex Abbott’s (2006-2008) dedication to Okefenokee Technical College, auxiliary members decided to honor him – as well as all past and future presidents of the auxiliary – with an Auxiliary Presidents Scholarship Fund. Abbott retired from OTC in 2002, after 38 years of employment there.

According to Cindy Tanner, Executive Director of the OTC Foundation, the names of past presidents of the SRMC Auxiliary can be viewed on OTC’s Website: http://www.okefenokeetech.edu/about/foundation_scholarships.asp

The Auxiliary supports SRMC and the community by providing hospital equipment, patient services, and various scholarships, including the Auxiliary Presidents Scholarship, from proceeds of the Gift Shop and annual fundraisers, such as book, jewelry and clothing sales and the Love Light Holiday Tree.
