Tammy Lee Receives Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship

Okefenokee Technical College student Tammy Lee (center) of Hoboken was recently awarded the Spring 2009 Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship for excelling in the OTC cosmetology program. OTC Foundation Director Cindy Tanner congratulated Lee for being selected for this honor and presented her with the $300 award on behalf of the OTC Foundation trustees, OTC President Gail Thaxton, and the Pike family. Lee will use her award check toward her state board exam fees.

Also on hand was OTC cosmetology instructor Debra Moody (right), who recommended Lee for the scholarship. According to Moody, Lee is “a great team member, always going above and beyond her duties.” “I see nothing but success for her,” Moody continued.Pike Scholarship

Working in the cosmetology field has been a dream of Tammy’s for 17 years. When Lee first started the cosmetology program in 1992, she became pregnant with her first child and decided to withdraw from classes until the child was older. However, from 1992 until 2001, she and her husband had five more children.

In her scholarship application, Lee wrote, “Although many times I wanted to start the program, I …waited until the time was right. I started the cosmetology program in July of 2008, and my youngest child started Pre-K in August 2008.”

“I considered the apprenticeship program,” wrote Lee, “but I chose OTC instead. I did some research and learned that OTC helps prepare you for the workforce and you learn more of the theory behind cosmetology. In addition, the instructors at OTC prepare you for the state board exam.”

The Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. John Pike and other family members to pay tribute to Mrs. Brooksie Pike, who had a forty-year career in cosmetology. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be full-time cosmetology students entering their final quarter at Okefenokee Technical College with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average and excellent work ethics grades.

Two Brooksie A. Pike Scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding cosmetology students at Okefenokee Tech. The OTC Foundation would like to congratulate Tammy Lee and thank Dr. John Pike and Penny Pike for establishing the scholarship fund.
