Camden Wal-Mart Supports Literacy with Donation to OTC

On behalf of the Camden Wal-Mart Super Center in St. Mary’s, Doris Cotton, Community Involvement Coordinator, (second from left) recently presented Sharon Matejka, Charlton County Adult Education instructor, (left) with a check for $1,000.

This generous investment in literacy was awarded to the Okefenokee Technical College Foundation for the Charlton County Adult Education program. As a result, Ms. Matejka will be able to better meet the needs of Charlton County residents who are pursuing a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.

Natalie Hannans (second from right), the Adult Education Advisory Committee Chair, and Freida Nettles (right), Advisory Committee member and community volunteer, were on hand to express appreciation to Ms. Cotton.

The Charlton County Adult Education program offers (1) assessment of skills, (2) counseling and advisement, (3) instruction in preparation for the GED test, (4) special reading instruction, (5) computerized instruction in preparation for skills training and literacy. Instruction is provided at no cost to the student.

Students who earn their GED will receive a $500 HOPE voucher to go toward tuition and fees at any technical college or Board of Regents college. Charlton County Adult Education registration hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.
