Weatherspoon Receives OTC Foundation Scholarship

Cynthia Weatherspoon (right) of Waycross was selected as one of the winter quarter 2009 recipients of an OTC Foundation Academic Scholarship. According to Foundation Executive Director Cindy Tanner, recipients of these scholarships must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and meet other criteria determined by the Foundation scholarship committee. Weatherspoon is a full-time student in the cosmetology program at Okefenokee Technical College and is employed at Salon Capelli. Her program instructor, Ollie Harkleroad, recommended Weatherspoon and said that Cynthia is “very worthy of the award.” Cindy Tanner and Cynthia Weatherspoon

According to Tanner, ten academic scholarships were awarded this month to deserving students who had made application for winter quarter. OTC Foundation trustees award up to ten academic scholarships each quarter. The amounts vary depending on program length and other criteria. Also during winter quarter, thirty-eight students received financial assistance totaling over $4,600 through the toolbox scholarship fund, while approximately 35 students received hardship grants. Academic scholarships and hardship grants are funded through the foundation’s annual fund drive, the Gritz & Glitz Gala, the Monroe Foundation, and OTC staff contributions (internal fund drive). Toolbox scholarships are funded through the Foundation’s golf tournament.

Congratulations to Cynthia Weatherspoon and the other winter quarter scholarship recipients.
